At JMA Resources, we are proud to highlight the inspiring journeys of our team members. This month, we’re excited to spotlight Spencer Cohen, a U.S. Army veteran whose exceptional dedication and determination continue to make a lasting impact in every role he takes on. 🌟
Spencer served five years of active duty in the U.S. Army from 2018 to 2023, achieving the rank of E-5, Sergeant. His military role focused on providing critical intelligence systems support as an Intelligence Systems Maintainer and Integrator (MOS 35T). Spencer’s responsibilities included setting up and configuring satellite communication systems, secure classified networks, servers, and mobile intelligence gathering platforms. His work was essential in ensuring that military intelligence analysts had the tools and networks necessary to collect, analyze, and act on vital intelligence.
Throughout his time in the Army, Spencer honed his technical expertise, particularly in system administration, where he managed both Windows Server and Linux systems. His leadership and communication skills also developed significantly, especially during high-pressure moments like briefing the Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) Commanding General during a training exercise at Fort Irwin, California. This experience, where he briefed a Major General as an E-5, was a proud and defining moment in his career.
In January 2023, Spencer transitioned to civilian life and joined JMA as a System Administrator for the NADACS program. He’s responsible for the administration, patching, and security of both Windows Server and Linux systems, roles that directly align with the technical experience he gained in the Army. His military background in system administration and network security made him a strong fit for the role at JMA, where he now plays a key part in maintaining and developing the infrastructure for the NADACS program, which operates within AWS Cloud environments.
Spencer credits his military service with preparing him for his civilian career, offering not only technical training but also leadership and communication skills that are crucial for success in any organization. His advice for veterans transitioning into civilian careers is to start early. He emphasizes the importance of networking, updating resumes, engaging with recruiters, and obtaining technical certifications to make the transition smoother. Spencer also recommends taking full advantage of veteran benefits, such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and connecting with the veteran community through organizations like the VFW and American Legion.
Through careful planning and proactive steps, Spencer was able to navigate his transition successfully and leverage his military experience to secure a fulfilling career at JMA. His story highlights the value of a strong work ethic, technical expertise, and leadership capabilities, all of which were cultivated during his service and continue to shape his contributions in the civilian sector.
